Pros:
- Inexpensive
- UL Listed (Safety certified)
- Compact
- Portable
Cons:
- No integrated cable wrap; need to purchase matching cable wrap for $19
- One plug type available (NEMA 14-30); no hardwired version
We ordered AmazingE off Amazon. They have a website, www.amazing-e.com, that you can now order directly off the site. (Of note: their website is the most creative, fun EVSE site, by far). Our AmazingE arrived 2 days later from Amazon, packaged well. The AmazingE comes with well-written directions and three carrying bags. Not sure why we need three, but one for AmazingE in the car and the other two for groceries, I guess.
With 16 Amps of power, the AmazingE can give our Chevy Volt about 11 hours of range per hour of charging – just like AmazingE says, three times faster than the Level 1 charger that came with the car.
A potential drawback to the AmazingE is that at this time there is only one kind of installation option: NEMA 14-30 plug. There is not a hardwired model or other plug options. If you don’t have a NEMA 14-30 receptacle, you can have one wired.
AmazingE is UL Listed, unlike all the other options in its price range (Amazon price fluctuates; we bought ours for $300, but have seen it as low as $250), so it’s a certified safe station to use. It has a slightly shorter cable than many of the stations we’ve reviewed in the past – 20 feet. This should be suitable for most situations, but always measure the distance between outlet and charge port of the vehicle before purchasing. Be sure there’s enough cable length to reach comfortably with some slack when it’s plugged in.
The AmazingE has a NEMA 4 rated enclosure, which means it’s watertight and ideal for indoor or outdoor use. Refer to your local codes when installing the AmazingE.
One of the nicest features of the AmazingE, in our opinion, is that it’s size and plug mean it’s very portable. If you’re looking for a Level 2 charging station to travel with you, this is probably the perfect station. The one drawback is that it doesn’t have an integrated cable wrap, meaning you’ll need to wrap the cable around the unit unless you just want to throw it in the carrying bag, which is certainly roomy enough to do (don’t keep cable wrapped around the station when charging/plugged in, however – this will cause too much heat in the cables, potentially damaging the cable or station). AmazingE does sell a cable wrap that can be mounted next to the station (or close to the car), when it’s hanging in the garage, so no need for integrated cable wrap; but when traveling you’ll have to wrap it up yourself.
AmazingE seems to be new to the market; we only noticed it on Amazon a couple months ago. However, as one astute Amazon reviewer discovered, the station appears to be manufactured by Delphi and ClipperCreek, OEM charging station suppliers for major automotive brands such as Chevy, Daimler, and Volkswagen. In fact, we agree with the reviewer that AmazingE looks exactly like the Chevy Bolt charger, except it is a faster charging station. AmazingE boasts “US-based service center” and when we called the number to ask questions and test customer service response, it was a very knowledgeable ClipperCreek employee who helped us. According to ClipperCreek, they “provide support” for AmazingE. There is no indication of a ClipperCreek relationship on the website or in the manual, but some kind of relationship does exist – another reason we love the AmazingE!
The AmazingE 16 Amp EV charging station is a great fit for vehicles such as: The Audi A-3 e-tron, Cadillac CT6 Hybrid, Chrysler Pacifica, Mercedes C350e, MINI Cooper Countryman Hybrid, Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid, Porsche Panamera 4 E-Hybrid, Volvo XC60, Volvo XC90 T8 and many more.

GREAT inexpensive EVSE, not 120V compatible
You can also see my full review at 300 MPG dot Org.
This is a great portable Level 2 EVSE.
It’s 16A, so it’s full power/full speed for vehicles with 3,300 watt or so chargers, such as the Chevy Volt and other plug-in hybrids, older Nissan Leafs, and Mitsubishi iMiEVs. (If you have a Bolt, or Leaf with 6.6K charger, you would likely want a 30A charger.)
This EVSE uses the NEMA 14-30 240V power plug. You could also build an adapter to other 240V connections. Since this EVSE does NOT use the neutral, you actually COULD cut off the neutral blade to make this compatible with both 14-30 AND 14-50 connections. That would be perfectly safe and electrically sound (although not for people who are afraid of voiding warranties…)
This EVSE will NOT run on 120V wall power.
The case is made by Delphi and the main circuit board is made by Clipper Creek.
This EVSE is NEARLY identical to the Gen 2 Chevy Volt EVSE, except with the 30A plug and the fact that it will NOT run on 120V.
Great product. Looks much better than the pictures. Good quality.
This charger is Awesome! Very light and easy to use. Just plugs in to an outlet I already have so it’s very portable and I can take it with me. Charges my 2015 (half-full) leaf in about 4 hours. I like that it’s made in the USA and has US based service if it needs it. Most importantly it is safety tested and certified. Some of the chargers were not safety certified and that was scary to me – why take the chance?
Works great. High quality materials. It looks just like the one in the Chevy Bolt, but higher power. Also faster charging.
Great product that works, charging time for my Ford CMax down to 2.2 hours from 6.5. Highly recommended.
More Industry Reviews of the AmazingE
The AmazingE is the lowest-cost choice of the three, and by a significant amount. At only $219.00 it’s a good value for a solid 240-volt portable charger. Like the ClipperCreek unit, it’s NEMA 4 rated, which is fine for use in all outdoor weather conditions.
