As I was browsing through Amazon I noticed this station with a 14-50 plug (which I have in my garage) and it’s priced under $500. It is also available as a hardwired unit, be aware that the manufacturer recommends a certified installer install the hardwired version for you. I bought this to charge my Kia Niro EV from home.
I’ve heard of Electrify America, especially during National Drive Electric week back in September. I like the fact that it has been safety tested and certified through UL Laboratories.
This EV charging station arrived sooner than the estimated time and came in a sturdy box and nice packaging.
Installing it onto the dock was a bit difficult. It’s just kind of awkward. I needed help from my husband who had a few choice words.
The station itself is a softer plastic material that didn’t seem very sturdy. I’m glad we installed it inside and not outside. The manufacturer says it’s indoor/outdoor rated however, I wouldn’t trust that. I do like the fact I can plug the connector in it to protect it from dust, dirt and debris. In the photo it shows wrapping the cable around the station, but it’s pretty heavy. I think I will get some sort of cable wrap instead to keep it off of the ground.
I like how the station lights up around the enclosure when it’s done with a sensor so that only lights up when you are nearby.
This charger is made in Gemany and says it works with all US made electric cars that have a SAE-J1772 connector such as the Chevy Bolt, Audi e-tron, Kia Soul, BMW i3, VW e-golf, Jaguar I-PACE, Hyundai Kona and Nissan LEAF.
The Electrify America Home Charging Station charges my car much faster than the Level 1 charger that came with my Niro, and overall, I would recommend.
User Reviews of the Electrify America
I had the unit installed by a professional electrician. 8 times out of 10 it works fine. However, I have gotten a red LED when unplugging the car. The unit will sometimes not start charging the car when plugged in. The car doesn’t recognize it is plugged in at that point. I’ve had a random red LED after the car was charged. The price for the unit was a savings compared to others, but the inconsistency is cause for concern.
I have been using this on my Chevy Bolt EV for about 2 weeks. So far everything works as advertised, charge rate around 11% an hr, about 7kws.
A few things to note – the body is all plastic, my application is for inside the garage so this is not a problem, but if its exposed to sunlight for prolonged periods I would expect it to break down over time. It also doesn’t come with a cord holder, the one on the wall in the photo was purchased separately.
Installation was easy enough, getting it to mount to its base plate was a bit of a fight, but I won’t site that as an “issue” with the unite, that could be were I was mounting it (not on a stud) and also if the seal isn’t tight then it wouldn’t be water proof. But if you are installing it yourself expect a bit of a fight there 🙂
Overall I am happy and would recommend this unit to anyone looking for a level 2 home charger that doesn’t need one that can be fully exposed to the elements. A great unit for a garage or covered car port. Thank you Electrify America, keep up the good work!
This purchase was a set of surprises. First of all they said it would be three or four weeks before it would arrive it arrived in three days. The package had everything we needed and wanted and super easy to install
If now sits in the corner of our garage neat as a pin
This was a very nice surprise as to how fast easy and affordable there’s always thank you
I use this unit to charge our 2019 e-Golf. It is hardwired and mounted outside in a protected place. Installation was pretty easy. The unit has been very reliable so far. Despite being all plastic it seems solid and very well designed. Unlike some other reviewer on here I have no problem wrapping the cable around it for storage. The charging cable is sturdy but still flexible. Built-in receptacle works well with its spring loaded door. The unit “senses” when someone is approaching and lights up. Charging is indicated with a blue light stripe going all around the edge of the front face that turns green once charging is complete. The light turns off after a while when no one is present, so won’t light up the neighborhood at night. Unfortunately it’s hardly visible in daylight — could be brighter. This is a no-frills no-WiFi no-app unit that has – so far – just worked solidly.
